A friend of mine, a dear friend, in that over the years that I knew him he endeared himself to me because of who he was, recently passed away, Iâm told that he died peacefully in his bed, not from the cancer that he had been dealing with but probably from a heart condition, anyway Iâm just glad that he passed over peacefully.
Glad that he passed peacefully because even though I didnât know much about his life I do know that parts of it were anything but peaceful.
I didnât know much about him personally because, simply, we did not talk much about his life but with what little we did talk about left me with the view that he had always struggled in his life, struggled with life, but I must add that he always seemed to live life with good cheer, live with a generous and positive attitude, which is one of the reasons that he endeared himself to me.
Shorty, I knew him by his nickname, real name Jeff Roberts, was a kind, generous and gentleman man.
I first met him as a young lad, a Melbourne boy from the suburbs, a âSharpâ, he ran with a gang of likely lads that followed the band that I was singing in at that time, Buster Brown, he was young and full of life and we became acquainted, he was at that time one of many fans, that followed the band, that I got to know.
Over the years that followed I left Melbourne to relocate to Sydney when I got the job to sing for Rose Tattoo but whenever we played in Melbourne Shorty was always there down the front with a handful of the diehards from the Buster days and weâd always catch up for a beer and a chat and thatâs how our relationship grew, we went from him being a fan to becoming a friend, we became mates and my affection for him grew.
Shorty was what we call âold schoolâ, he was loyal, loving, staunch and true blue and I do not throw these words around carelessly, he had the heart of a Lion and a generosity of spirit that was given freely to all, Iâm honoured to call him friend, mate, cobber and I hope he knows that.
